How we score roofers
Every roofer on RooferScore gets a score out of 100 from public data. Nobody can pay to change it. This page gives the formula, the points and the sources, and every listing shows its inputs with the date we checked them.
The formula · 100 possible points
| Input | Points | How points are awarded |
|---|---|---|
| Google rating | 35 | 5.0 = 35. 4.8 and up = 30. 4.5 and up = 22. 4.0 and up = 12. Below 4.0 = 0. |
| Review count | 25 | 200 or more = 25. 100 or more = 20. 50 or more = 15. 20 or more = 10. 10 or more = 5. Under 10 = 0. |
| Review recency | 10 | Latest review within 30 days = 10. Within 90 = 7. Within 180 = 4. Within 365 = 2. Older = 0. |
| Licence match | 20 | Queensland: a current entry in the QBCC register matched to the business by name = 20. Lapsed or suspended = 0 and flagged. Not found = 0, shown as "not matched". Other states: check pending, input left out and score rescaled. |
| Years trading | 10 | ABN active 10 years or more = 10. 5 or more = 7. 2 or more = 4. Under 2 = 1. |
Ranking order is the score. A tie goes to the business with more reviews.
Why these five inputs
Rating and review count carry the most points because homeowners already read them, and a high rating on a few reviews says little. Recency shows a business is still trading. Licence match checks what a review cannot. Years trading shows how long it has held its ABN.
Where the evidence comes from
- Rating, review count and review dates: Google Business Profile data, pulled monthly, with the date on every page. We never edit reviews.
- Licence: Queensland only for now. We match each business by name against the QBCC register's open data and show the date we checked. In New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia the check is pending, so licence is left out of the score and each page says so.
- Years trading: ABN start date from the Australian Business Register. Until we look up a business's ABN, this input is left out and the listing says "Years trading not checked yet".
"Not matched" means we could not find a current entry under that business name. It does not mean a business has no licence: it may trade under another name, or do work below the state's threshold.
If an input is unavailable
If a licence check is pending, or review dates or ABN start dates are unavailable, we remove that input and rescale: points earned divided by points available, times 100. The page says "rescaled from" the points available. We never guess.
How the Reply Test works
Status: the Reply Test has not run yet. This is the method for the first round, and every business shows “Not tested yet” until then.
Each quarter we send every listed roofer one standard enquiry through its public contact details, describing a typical job. It is a test and we do not book the work. We log the hours to the first reply, whether a ballpark figure came back, and the figure. Our cost guides call these ballpark figures given in reply to our standard enquiry and keep them apart from written quotes. Results show as a dated badge and history on the listing and on the Reply Test page. They are not part of the score. To opt out, tell us and we will mark the business "opted out of testing".

How we make money
Roofers can pay for labelled spots. They sit outside the ranked list and never change a score or an order. Details are on How we make money.
