(1) Ballpark figures given in reply to our standard enquiry (the Reply Test) are not collected yet, so no median is shown. A ballpark figure is not a written quote.
(2) Published cost guides: one entry per source, with the date it gives for its rates. A range from one state is shown only against that state's cities.
Listing medians are the Google rating and review count of the roofers on our list in each city. They describe the businesses, not prices.

No ballpark figures have been collected yet, because the Reply Test has not run. We hold 0 written quotes so far. A city gets its own page, built from both, when it reaches 10 prices.

What changes the price

  1. Sarking blanket. Ask for a roof blanket between the metal and the trusses. It is easy to leave out of a cheap quote.
  2. Roof size and complexity. A single-pitch roof with no valleys is cheaper per square metre than a roof with many valleys and penetrations.
  3. Steel and finish. Colorbond, Zincalume and other finishes are priced differently. Ask which, and which colour range.
  4. Replacing tiles. Taking off tiles adds disposal, and tiles-to-metal can need tie-downs, a permit or engineering.
  5. Insulation, gutters and downpipes. Check whether they are in or out of the quote.
  6. Waste disposal. Ask for it in the contract; skips fill quickly with old roofing.
  7. Warranty. Years for the sheets, years for the workmanship, and who backs each.

Ask every roofer to price the same list, in writing, so you are comparing like with like.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

How much does a metal roof cost in Australia?

Published cost guides disagree on a new metal roof: $18,000 to $36,000 per job in one, $8,000 to $18,000 per job in another (published cost guides, checked 17 Oct 2026). The finish and whether you are replacing tiles move the price most.

Why do metal roof quotes differ so much?

Inclusions differ: blanket, tie-downs, insulation, gutters and disposal. One homeowner reported five quotes for the same 205 m² Colorbond roof from $29,800 to $47,200 (r/AusRenovation, April 2025). Price the same list from each roofer.

Can I put a metal roof over my tiles?

Metal usually replaces the tiles rather than sitting over them. Ask your council and insurer first, and ask the roofer for the compliance certificate at handover.

Will my insurer accept the new roof?

Ask before you sign. One homeowner reported an insurer refusing a claim because the roof had not been installed competently (r/AusRenovation, 2025). Keep the compliance certificate and the invoice.

Do I need a licensed roofer in your state?

Ask for the number and look it up on your state register. The guide to hiring a roofer links to each one.

How do I measure my roof to compare quotes?

Published cost guides disagree on a new metal roof: $18,000 to $36,000 per job in one, $8,000 to $18,000 per job in another (published cost guides, checked 17 Oct 2026).
